Apparently he told the House of Representatives economic committee that the global downturn was so swift that no one could have stopped a slowdown here in Australia. But with lower interest rates, a favourable exchange rate and fiscal stimulus, "there is no reason for any downturn to be a deep one". 0 17 Media Industry Bracing itself for Advertising Cutbacks The Media Industry is bracing itself for significant budget cuts in 2009. In a survey completed by Media Voice, 66 percent cent of respondents expect advertising budgets to decrease by up to 20%. It appears that businesses plan to spend the majority of their marketing and advertising spend online. Industry rag AdNews reports that online and digital advertising spend will most likely grow in their share of advertising budgets over this period. 0 16 Wage Costs Increase for Retailers The AFR have reported that the Australian Retailers Association is pushing for new workplace deals that will limit wage increases for small retailers. The ARA are encouraging small retailers to implement new workplace deals now. The reason being is that a new Retail Award will come into play from January 2010.
